STATEMENT

"Souvenir is a skirt that has been around the world, probably more times than we know—from the sheep, dyers, spinners, weavers, sewers, to a store, a waist, back to a secondhand shop for Audrey to find, for Carol to store, and for Mae to finally pass to me. I spent the months of June and July traveling to New York, Oaxaca, Hong Kong, Marseilles, and ended back in Amsterdam, darning in planes, trains, hotels, gardens, you name it. In each location, I found yarn or a tiny trinket to add to the skirt, wanting to document my time in some way and remind us of a thing’s journey and the life it has had before us. Pink darns are original mends, while the blue darns are mended over a previous owner’s repair. A new pink stripe was incorporated to connect all the darns, and a small button from my Grandma Billie’s collection was added as the last token to connect back to Audrey." Sam Bennett

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Sam Bennett is a repair artist and design researcher whose work explores aging, care, and repair through material culture, storytelling, and participatory practices. Her practice is grounded in co- creation, slowness, and care aesthetics, building frameworks that value the aging and embodied knowledge. She facilitates public repair programs in libraries, schools, and residencies, using mending as a platform for social dialogue and collective memory.
