Expressive Repair is an interactive FREE workshop led by artist Miron Kiselev, dedicated to repairing and extending the life of garments. On the table lies a shared piece of fabric where participants are invited to leave a “mark.” They are also encouraged to bring their own clothing to repair, making the workshop both a collective and personal exploration. Each mark or repair becomes a starting point for conversations about care, fast fashion, and our individual ability to resist the urge to discard clothing too soon.

Participants are invited to experiment freely with materials such as embroidery floss, beads, fabric scraps, or a mini loom. While Miron may guide them through specific techniques, the ultimate goal is to capture an authentic expression of the maker. In this way, repair becomes not only practical, but also a creative process and a meaningful act of care.

ARTIST STATEMENT

"My fascination with creating objects that challenge the fashion status quo began during my years as a student. By examining why we are drawn to certain materials, I envision a future in which we favor natural fabrics and extend the life of garments through repair.I aim to share knowledge and foster awareness about the hidden waste behind artificial fibers, chemical dyes, and outsourced manufacturing. I believe that an informed consumer can embrace sustainability at an individual level. While I may be idealistic, I hope that once sustainability becomes fashionable, fast fashion will lose its grip, and we will learn to love and cherish our clothes more deeply.Through embroidery and “Expressive Repair” workshops, I explore ways of cultivating a special bond between wearer and garment. Repairing, embellishing, or modifying clothing allows us to create one-of-a-kind pieces that reflect individuality, care, and creativity." Miron Kiselev

ARTIST BIO

Miron Kiselev is a New York City–based artist who received his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2019. He has exhibited work in Moscow, Providence, and New York. His practice is rooted in repurposed and upcycled fabrics, often incorporating embroidery and embellishment to encourage viewers to consider repair as a path toward extending the life of garments.

In 2018, Miron created Expressive Repair at the RISD Museum—an ongoing project that has since been featured at New York Textile Month, Atlantic Antic, and Earth Day. His artistic practice draws inspiration from graffiti and a search for a visual language that promotes sustainability through fashion. He firmly believes in the personal responsibility of prolonging the life of garments to minimize waste and cultivate individuality.
