LEAH HUANG | Memory Tracing Through Patterns on Paper
LEAH HUANG | Memory Tracing Through Patterns on Paper
Wool skirts tell their stories through materiality, palette and also patterns, just as repetition of shapes, colors, and gestures become visual codes that embed into our memory body throughout time.
In this watercolor based workshop with artist Leah Huang, we will explore an intuitive way of creating repetition based paintings that draw from our well of personal symbolism.
🗓️ Saturday, January 17th | From 4 to 6pm
📍 67 West St. Studio 513
Watercolor is a medium that resists control. The water and pigment often settle in a rhythm of their own, and once a mark is made, it cannot be reversed. For this reason, many are hesitant to approach watercolor. But in this workshop, we will leverage the unique nature of watercolor on paper: pushing us to relinquish control while meditating on and connecting with our own non-linear stories. Open to all levels, this prompt based workshop does not focus on the skill of painting, but rather uses it as a conduit to connect with our sense of play, trust, and inner knowing. Bring an object of affection from your life, we will be using it as a jumping off point for our personal creations.
ARTIST BIO
Leah Huang (b.1992, Wuhan, China) is a self taught artist based in Brooklyn, NY. She began developing her visual language in painting through the practice of analog photography, while working in the fashion industry for nearly 15 years. Her visual practices interweave a symbolic vocabulary with the power of chance. In exploring her relationship with watercolor and working on paper: she utilizes an intuitive approach which cultivates trust and resilience through material restraint. The paintings occupy the unconscious space between abstraction and figuration, suggesting contradictions and the unresolved zones of life.
Leah’s work has been included in exhibitions across the tri-state area and is in private and corporate collections across the U.S. Recent exhibitions include: An Interpreted World Is Not A Home with Tempest Gallery, Annual Works on Paper Exhibition with Visionary Projects. Recent residencies include the summer residency program at Orein Arts, and Openings NY. In addition to her work as an artist, she has also co-curated two group exhibitions in 2024, culminating in Studio 9D in Chelsea and Living Skin in Brooklyn. In the last year, Leah has also begun leading a series of intuitive watercolor workshops “Gesture As Trust” at Tempest Gallery in Ridgewood.
