21 ARTISTS AND DESIGNERS CREATED 29 PIECES FROM 47 SKIRTS FOR WOOL SKIRTS EXHIBITION AND CAPSULE.

ARTIST: Kisook Suh

SKIRT NO: 32.401

MATERIALS: Wool skirt, yarns obtained by unraveling the skirt’s cut edges

METHODS: Hand-stitching, darning

STATEMENT

My very first description of the skirt after a close look was ‘impeccably reversible’ even with the variations of its check patterns and the combined construction of a wrapping & amp; pleated skirt. With great precision, the whole process of manufacturing, from weaving to tailoring, was deliberately designed to create a perfectly reversible skirt. (*please replace if there is any better word for it. I feel sewing is not enough.)

The skirt was in very good condition; the only damage consisted of several small insect holes. I chose a repair method that would result in the least possible visual change: reconstructing the missing warp and weft using yarns from the skirt itself. These yarns were obtained by carefully unraveling the cut edge of the fabric. Two strands, in beige and navy, were collected and used for the repair. The remaining yarns were placed in a small fabric pouch and attached to the inside of the skirt waistband, just beneath the Woolmark label, for future use.

Throughout the project, my priorities were to preserve the skirt’s reversible quality and to apply sustainable approaches to repairing the damage.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Kisook Suh is a textile conservator who has worked for The Metropolitan Museum of Art since 2006. During the pandemic, she expanded her practice of repairing her family’s well-loved clothes and shared her thoughts on repair and restoration through The Met’s podcast series, Frame of Mind: Mending Hope. This experience with public exposure taught her the idea of activism in a more relatable way. Soon after the pandemic, she joined the local community group, Rivertowns Repair Café, where she volunteers as a repair coach or fixer. She tries to teach people simple mending techniques with needles and threads while fixing various things brought to the Repair Cafe, from a quilted blanket to a teddy bear.
