STATEMENT

“Late at night after my daughter’s bed time, I put in the zipper by hand. Following the holes of the original zipper, pinning, basting, and finally st itching with small little back stitches, I completed the project. As I folded up the skirt, I thought perhaps the woman who abandoned this zipper was a mother herself. A mother like me who also planned too much and thought she had time for daydreaming in th read, when all she really had time for was the practical.” Alexandra Barlow

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Alexandra Barlow is a textile conservator and textile artist living and working in New York City. In her conservation work, she works in The Department of Textile Conservation at The Metropolitan Museum of Art where she is the liaison textile conservator for the American Wing, working with both the American decorative arts and the Native American collections. She joined The Met in 2015 to work on the conservation treatment of 16th-century and 17th-century tapestries for the renovation of the British Galleries. As an artist, Alexandra’s work focuses on embroidery and beadwork.
